Summary

Ever since Margot was born, it's been just her and her mother。 No answers to Margot's questions about what came before。 No history to hold on to。 No relative to speak of。 Just the two of them, stuck in their run-down apartment, struggling to get along。 But that's not enough for Margot。 She wants family。 She wants a past。 And she just found the key she needs to get it: A photograph, pointing her to a town called Phalene。 Pointing her home。 Only, when Margot gets there, it's not what she bargained for。 Margot's mother left for a reason。 But was it to hide her past? Or was it to protect Margot from what's still there? The only thing Margot knows for sure is there's poison in their family tree, and their roots are dug so deeply into Phalene that now that she's there, she might never escape。

This book is so raw, and PERFECTLY encapsulates so much of what I personally feel towards my own mother and family that I cannot say anything that isn't biased about this book。I love Rory Power's style of taking very real-life harmful substances and expanding their horror, creating this gothic modern day work circling around characters living IN this modern gothic setting。 This book has a very intriguing mystery about the Nielsen farm, sure, but it's also about the Nielsen FAMILY and about what This book is so raw, and PERFECTLY encapsulates so much of what I personally feel towards my own mother and family that I cannot say anything that isn't biased about this book。I love Rory Power's style of taking very real-life harmful substances and expanding their horror, creating this gothic modern day work circling around characters living IN this modern gothic setting。 This book has a very intriguing mystery about the Nielsen farm, sure, but it's also about the Nielsen FAMILY and about what love is and isn't; "can you understand someone without forgiving them?"。This book has completely changed my life, and was such a cathartic experience that I will forever be grateful for。 Holy fuck。 Thank you, Rory Power。 Thank you for putting to words what I have felt for 23 years and slowly uncovered the roots and tangled vines of feelings。 Thank you。 。。。more

DNF, 1。5 stars。 The characterisation was was messy and inconsistent, the story was also incredibly rushed。 I can see the appeal in the sorta mystery vibe of the plot, but the construction was disappointing。

Very enjoyable mystery! The ending was shocking and I enjoyed the writing! I was enthralled by this and finished it in about a day。

Couldn’t put this down。 What starts as a complicated mother/daughter relationship unwinds to a mind boggling story with twists you will NEVER suspect。 Super weird and interesting…and pretty plausible - which I Appleton a story like this。 There’s also a gross ick factor - not sure if it’s enough to qualify as horror…but enough to give you some shivers。

This book was great。 Such a page turner, with an exciting plot that made you just want, no need, to know the truth。 To find out the answer。 I just did NOT see where this story was going until it hit me and I was reading it。

I was expecting a lot of magical realism and unfortunately it was only ever briefly brought up and too late in the story to interest me much。 While Wilder Girls was atmospheric and dark, Burn Our Bodies Down felt superficial and lacked what made Rory Power's debut so good。 The writing itself was good, but I found Margot too annoying for a main character we're supposed to be rooting for, and the denouement came too late and felt rushed。 There weren't clues that the reader could follow and piece t I was expecting a lot of magical realism and unfortunately it was only ever briefly brought up and too late in the story to interest me much。 While Wilder Girls was atmospheric and dark, Burn Our Bodies Down felt superficial and lacked what made Rory Power's debut so good。 The writing itself was good, but I found Margot too annoying for a main character we're supposed to be rooting for, and the denouement came too late and felt rushed。 There weren't clues that the reader could follow and piece together as they went, the reveals felt flimsy at best, and the pacing of the plot was very heterogenous。 Vera (and by extension all of Phalene) is experiencing side effects from a chemical she used on her fields after it was banned, but surely it should not be such a surprise to see it happening; if it had been consistently used before the ban, other places probably saw the same things happening to them。 In fact, logically, that would be what got it banned in the first place。 It makes no sense for everybody to be in the dark about it。 I am overall disappointed and feel let down by the author。 。。。more

I think it did what it is meant to accomplish in the age group that it is in。The narrator really saved this book。 But the ending I felt was too easy。

Cindy

A mysterious family with lots of secrets。 A good thriller type book with a surprise development。

That’s weird。 That’s suspicious。 Also it was kinda dumb。

While Wilder Girls was a pleasant surprise, this was mostly a disappointment。 The protagonist was too whiney for me。 Her and basically all the characters were unrelatabel, their dialogues and actions weird and illogical。 The twists (after the first one) very predictable。 The premise was cool again but I think I would have enjoyed it much much more if we had spent more time on the farm with Margot than in her head。 The beginning was too long but the time Margot spent at Gram's way too short。 What While Wilder Girls was a pleasant surprise, this was mostly a disappointment。 The protagonist was too whiney for me。 Her and basically all the characters were unrelatabel, their dialogues and actions weird and illogical。 The twists (after the first one) very predictable。 The premise was cool again but I think I would have enjoyed it much much more if we had spent more time on the farm with Margot than in her head。 The beginning was too long but the time Margot spent at Gram's way too short。 What was it, 3 days for everything to happen? If it was several weeks, if we had more scenes with Margot and Tess (and Eli) and they actually formed some kind of friendship together, the horror and weirdness only slowly creeping upon us。 I would have enjoyed that way more。 。。。more

The frustrating build up emersed me into the story completely, almost seeing my own face in the main character。 This followed by an explosive and seemingly sudden ending made this an easy and satisfying read。

I guess this was a solid read, but it did not wow me。 It felt like all of the action took place in the last 10-20%, and then it just felt somewhat far-fetched。 I was also kind of disappointed by the queerbaiting in the first half。。。 Anyways, some people might enjoy the suspense, but it wasn't for me。 I guess this was a solid read, but it did not wow me。 It felt like all of the action took place in the last 10-20%, and then it just felt somewhat far-fetched。 I was also kind of disappointed by the queerbaiting in the first half。。。 Anyways, some people might enjoy the suspense, but it wasn't for me。 。。。more

At first It was a 4 stars read but I’ve decided to give it a 5 stars because oh boy。。。 It was an experience who is kind of hunting me !I’m a fantasy reader but I wanted to change a bit, read others things so I pick up a brunch of YA mysteries/thrillers and this one did not disappoint。So here I am reading and being confused most of the book, turning the next page because I needed answers just like Margot, not understanding everything just like Margot。。。And I didn’t know there was an horror aspect At first It was a 4 stars read but I’ve decided to give it a 5 stars because oh boy。。。 It was an experience who is kind of hunting me !I’m a fantasy reader but I wanted to change a bit, read others things so I pick up a brunch of YA mysteries/thrillers and this one did not disappoint。So here I am reading and being confused most of the book, turning the next page because I needed answers just like Margot, not understanding everything just like Margot。。。And I didn’t know there was an horror aspect to this book so when things started to click in my head about a certain place, all those weird reference to that place and it’s purpose and everything I was like “no I’m just crazy, it can’t be。” And I was scared to keep reading and found out I was right (which I was) because that was so strange and it was creepy。。 And I loved it !Like I said, this book is an experience if you’re not familiar with that kind of book。 You will have so many questions, you will have the need to turn to the next pages because you will need answers。 It will be creepy。 And you will probably be thinking about it for quite a few days and hopefully, you will love it ! 。。。more

An exciting, suspenseful, entertaining book about a town you could never dream of living in。。。or want to! When teenager Margot fights with her mom, and goes to stay with her Gram, she is involved in a town of things you’ll never believe。 I loved Wilder Girls, and this book did not disappoint me。 Looking forward to reading more Rory Power books。
